The R.D.Engineering works was founded in 1976 and in 1995, this company was rename to Sujay Enterprises by Rabindra Nath Dutta, a descendant of Sujay Dutta son of Rabindra Nath Dutta who established Shield Corporation Pvt. Ltd. at ADDRESS – 17/1, BINOD LAL GHOSH STREET, P.O – ALAMBAZAR in 2015. It is the oldest continuing company in Kolkata. Its principal products were the manufacturing of shovels and like instruments, as well as springs for wagons. Rabindra Nath Dutta’s son’s continued the company renaming it Shield Corporation Pvt. Ltd.

As the company evolved over the next two hundred years, it became heavily involved in distribution of automotive and truck parts, with branch locations in Kolkata. In the early 19s, the Dutta family sold all locations to outside interests. The operation continued to distribute automotive parts and heavy duty items such as power take-offs and driveshafts for the truck market. It remained in this line of distribution until 1976.

Today

The Company now specializes in the distribution and fabrication/ assembly of industrial power transmission products. This segment involves the application engineering, distribution and / or modification of our products to a customer’s specific need. The Rowland Company identifies itself as “The Problem Solver” in any type of situation that involves the transmission of power from a driven force to a driving force. The products which are typically used in these power transmission applications include brakes, clutches, couplings, drive shafts, friction materials, and other related items.

Heritage of Location

“North of Cossipore lies Barnagore, well dotted with brick houses, which indicate the remains of that opulence which grew up with the commercial establishments of the Dutch. During the greater part of the last century this settlement belonged to them, and here their vessels anchored on their way to Chinsurah. It is said to have been originally a Portuguese establishment. It was a place of considerable trade when Calcutta was the abode of wild beasts.”

Presently Baranagar is located in the northern fringe of the Metropolis of Kolkata. Formerly, in 1668 – 1669 A.D. – Dutch invaders had occupied Baranagar and by the formation of ‘Rampart’ along with P.B.P. (Public Boundary Pillar) concluded their commanding domination over the area, moreover converted entire region as their ‘Fort’, i.e. ‘Gor’ [Model – ‘Esplanade’ of Calcutta (in Bengali, commonly known as ‘Gorer Math’)] and lastly established Factory in Baranagar.

The British East India Company procured 38 villages in the year of 1717 and added these countryside areas to their property in Calcutta. Later they reconstituted them as 55 villages or Mouzas (Panchannogram). Cossipore was one of those villages. Currently, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (of Ward No: 1) covering Cossipore has Baranagore on the North, Sinthee on the East, Paikpara on the South-East, Chitpur on the south and the Hooghly River on the West.

More than two centuries old Gun and Shell Factory at Cossipore (was Setup in the year of 1802 A.D.) is the ‘Oldest surviving Factory in Indian Subcontinent’ (situated just beside of Baranagar). Since long back, Baranagar was one of the vital neighborhoods of Calcutta and as a consequence, the impact of area’s socio-economic state was significantly affected by the ups & downs of The Cossipore Gun & Shell factory, The Government Gun Foundry, The Snider and Rifle Shell factories (originally constructed by Colonel Hutchinson), Sugar mills, Jute screw houses and so forth. In February, 1892 A.D. the identical Monastery was relocated to Alambazar, Baranagar.

In between these 12 Mandirs, he was also able to put up an attractive wide and concreted ‘Bathing Ghat’ (famous in Bengali as ‘Lochon Ghosher Ghat’) in the year of 1219 (Bangabda).

In later phase, ‘Kuli Line’ (labour quarter) was constructed in this garden area, especially for Baranagar Jute Mill, nevertheless this 12 ‘mandirs’ (mostly are moderately ruined yet presently attempted to modernize) & ‘Ghat’ is surviving by some means. Gradually, visionary persona Late Dhirendra Nath was able to make an enduring bond with “Baranagar Jute Factory”.

Late Dhirendra Nath Dutta’s son Rabindra Nath Dutta was proficient to pursue the path of his farsighted father. He was able to procure a priceless piece of land laying and situated just beside of ‘Path Bari – Baranagar’ (internally acknowledged and celebrated holy zone for arrival of Sri Sri Chaitanya Dev at Baranagar) and constructed his permanent abode there. With his own zeal and zest eventually Rabindra Nath established a manufacturing unit “R.D.Engineering Works” for Industrial Automation in the year of 1976. The operation continued with Manufacturing, Sales, Services and Distribution of Heavy-duty Automotive Parts such as ‘Take-offs’, ‘Drive-Shafts’ etc for ‘Heavy Earth Moving Equipment’, ‘Truck’ etc. After unbeaten success of nearly two Decades, the identical organization was renamed by him in the year of 1995 as “Sujay Enterprises”.

Sujay Dutta, brilliance son of Rabindra Nath and grandson of Late Dhirendra Nath is bearing the legacy of ancestor’s industrial and moral acumen. Born in this family, Sujay grew up in a socially active Bengali family surrounded by intellectuals and visionary industrialists of Bengal. The third generation of Late Dhirendra Nath, Sujay received his early schooling at Baranagar and continued his formal studies under renowned academia – the University of Calcutta. He did well in his studies, also took in-depth interest in engineering segment especially industrial automation and its novel modification through assorted addition, alteration and application of latest technological advantages with 360 degree customer centric module.
